BREAKING NEWS: SA rapper and artist Kieran Forbes, popularly known by his stage name AKA has been shot and killed on Florida Road in Durban, KZN. Cause of the incident is not yet known although witnesses say that an altercation broke out before firearms were discharged.
Kiernan Jarryd Forbes (born January 28, 1988), better known by his stage name AKA, is a South African rapper. Born and raised in Cape Town, Forbes rose to fame with the release of the single Victory Lap from his debut studio album Altar Ego (2011).
Forbes continued its success with the release of studio albums including Levels (2014), Touch My Blood (2018), Bhovamania (2020) and Be Careful What You Wish For (2017), a collaboration with Anatii.
In April 2020, Forbes launched a watermelon-flavored drink with vodka brand Cruz, featuring its initials on the bottle. That same month, Forbes was a special guest at WWE Live events in Johannesburg and Cape Town. In 2019, he was a cast member of the Comedy Central Roast Special.
Forbes was born in 1988. In 2002, Forbes formed a hip-hop group called Entity with two of his friends, Vice Versa and Greyhound. The group was nominated for Best African Hip-Hop at the KORA Awards. The company dissolved in 2006, prompting Forbes to study audio engineering. In 2006, Forbes formed the production team The IV League with two other members. The IV League awarded production credits to artists such as Khuli Chana, ProKid, and JR. In 2009, three songs “In My Walk”, “I Do” and “Mistakes” were released.
On July 28, 2010, Forbes released “I Want It All”, the lead single from his debut studio album Altar Ego. The album also pre-released two singles, “All I Know” and “Victory Lap”. “Victory Lap” was a success as it topped the local South African radio charts. Alter Ego was subsequently released on August 23, 2011. The album was certified Gold by RiSA for its commercial success. The album won several awards, notably Best Hip Hop Album at the 2011 Metro FM Awards and Best Male Artist of the Year at the 2012 South African Music Awards.
